Boxfile Creative specialises in the digital repair and restoration of older photographs. Whether you have one special photograph that you would like enlarged for display or a small collection you would like to be able to view on screen, share over the internet or turn into a photo-book, I'm here to help.

This is not the cheapest service you can find but, if you live in North Surrey, it is one of the most comprehensive and convenient. All you need is some photographs to choose from, and a phone.

Commissions start at £150 and include personal collection of original photographs, assistance in selection of suitable images, individual attention being paid to each scan and personal hand delivery back to you of the finished work and your originals.

Scans to disc from small prints start at £6 each, so a £150 commission can include up to 25 images. For a typical batch of 1930s prints, with a few interesting fades and blemishes, expect £10 an image to include minor repairs and corrections for on screen viewing or printing no larger than A6.

At the other end of the scale, detailed repairs to badly damaged originals, carried out to the standard required to withstand close scrutiny when printed at A4 or larger, may run into hundreds of pounds for a single image and are only recommended for photos of particular personal significance. Repairs are carried out to non-damaging scans of black & white or colour prints, negatives or slides.

I never use customer images for promotional purposes so here is, with permission, the only existing photograph of my wife's grandfather as a guide to the cost of a more complex repair and enlargement.

The original photo was studio quality, approximately 90mm x 55mm (about the size it appears here) and included multiple cracks, creases, fold marks and an assortment of other minor blemishes.

Repaired and enlarged to print at 270mm x 165mm, this finished work would have cost around £250

This is a section of my working file to not show the repairs to the subjects eye when viewed closely. Not all images warrant this level of attention or expense but if you have one that does, please call.
